Japanese used Tatami Omote Targets for Tameshigiri
If you want to train with the same targets as a Japanese dojo uses, these are the wara for you.
They are generally stiffer and harder to cut than our Mugen Dachi tatami and recommended if you plan
to compete or test in Japan. They are generally heavier and are a much higher grade than our new tatami.
They are also easier to spike on a target stand and can be much more challenging to cut.
Because they are used and comprised of several different grades of tatami omote, they are much
less consistent than our new tatami omote. Some are practically new while others are well used.
They require additional soak time and should be soaked for at least 24 hours. You will need to
check for staples and other debris since these have been previously used as flooring in Japan.
We will make sure you don't get any partial or rotted mats, but quality can vary.
When stored in bulk they have a less pervasive odor compared to the new tatami. It is more like an antique shop than a hay barn. They will make up for this when you soak them, so be warned that they can get a bit funky.
They will provide your dojo or house with that authentic distinctive Japanese dojo smell.
Join the ultimate international recycling effort and give this tatami one last purpose as you test your tameshigiri skill.
